Live Music - Wow!

Daryl has posted in the past about his love for live music and I can see his point. In the past week, we've been lucky enough to see 3 great live performances. We saw Harry Manx Friday night, Tom Wilson (fronting Lee Harvey Osmond) on Saturday in St. thomas & Colin Linden last night @ the London Music Hall.

All were great shows and even my wife said on the drive home,"we should go see more shows and take a risk on a few performers we haven't heard of".

That leads to to my question. Do you go to live concerts for bands/performers whose music you don't know? If so, what criteria do you use? Do you chose by venue (ie - that place always has my type of music so I'll try this band that is playing there)? Are there any upcoming live shows you're looking forward to? Sorry for the slowness of updates; as I warned you, summmer's almost here & my mind is turning to mush.

When I go to a live show I
pretty well know what I'm in
store for. Very rarely am I
unprepared. When I saw Bruce
Springsteen in 1978 I really
didn't know what to expect.
I had my mind blown - still
the best rock and roll show
I've seen. Porcupine Tree
was another pleasant surprise.
I really didn't know their
music at all. I wouldn't go
see a band just because of
the venue.
One concert I'm looking
forward to is the Black
Crowes at Centennial Hall.
The Crowes are one of rock's
best live bands - and that's
an intimate venue. Steve, for
$52 I highly recommend this
concert. Too bad it's on a
NFL Sunday!
Harry Manx was great, no?
Loved the new material but
wasn't crazy about his cover
of `Down By The River'.

Daryl, thanks for the tip. I only have the Crowes' debut CD so should try some more of their stuff and consider the live event.
Harry was great as you said. I had my BGO t-shirt on but you must not have seen me :-). Know what you mean about,"Down By The River". I think he performed that one @ the Neil Young tribute night in TO a few nights later. The new stuff sounds good & am looking forward to the new CD in the fall. I wish I'd seen the '78 Springsteen show. I'm not sure anyone had a better "run" of success than Bruce did from '75 to '85. I've re-watched a few live videos of him back then on YouTube and like you said, it was the best thing going.
There is a musician I like named Ray Bonneville, who's in Guelph on October 21, so hoping he'll make the trek down the 401 to London for the next night at someplace like London Music Club. Fingers crossed.
