Yawn-Golf
Rosie O'Donnell once quipped that golf was,"men in ugly pants walking". To say I find it boring is an understatement. This weekend, the Masters will dominate TV screens for fans of the sport. I'm always stunned by the popularity of this sport. While I acknowledge that it take skill to play the game, I still fin it elitist and mind-numbing. I saw a post on Dan Brown's blog recently in which a reader remarked about a cheap rate of $20.00 for a round in the spring, at a public course. $20.00??!! I can get the same amount of exercise walking around my neighbourhood for free. And that doesn't include the cost of clubs, balls, clothing, shoes, etc. I guess I just don't get the appeal. Can anyone educate me?

Your post reminded me of an old Ellen Degeneres sitcom where she was answering phone calls. The caller mentioned something about Tiger Woods, and her response was we're supposed to think this guy is great because hs can hit a ball with a stick.
I don't play tennis or golf but have nothing
against either game. What I fail to see is the
adulation and fuss paid to golfers and tennis
players....in particular the slobbering over
Eldrick Woods. THAT I don't get.
i'm watching the Masters. i like watching golf. i'm not a big fan of the game, but it's almost like an aquarium. it's not noisy; it's relaxing to watch. it doesn't have an edit every 4 seconds. there is green grass and trees and men talking in soothing voices. an island of serenity in an otherwise hyper medium.
Hey, I am that $20 guy from Dan's blog!! :D Golf is the only sport I play and other than softball, the only sport I could play well (enough). Golf is a walk in the park, man. (sometimes spoiled as Mark Twain said). It is most certainly not as easy as it looks, but not so tough to learn either. You DO NOT get the same exercise walking on sidewalks. No sport is for everyone, but golf is sure for me. The Masters to me is like the Superbowl to others. I hunker down on the sofa for the duration.
420-Friendly, thanks for your feedback. I hope the Masters was everything you want it to be. Like you said, it's not for everyone and I guess you & I will have to agree to disagree. My only quesiton is the ridiculous costs that seem to have gotten associated with golf as it's popularity grew. I love the folks that are out @ 5:30 AM in the summer so they can get a tee time.
Anonymous (#2), your description of golf is sort of like listening to one of those new-age spa radio stations. I am LOL @ the aquarium analogy.
Daryl, from his steady stream of victories thus far, Woods gets that adulation because he's pretty good at what he does. Where I suspect it crosses the line for you (as it does for me) is with the "pop star" attention (paparatzi, etc. following him around).
Anonymous (#1), that same "ball and stick" comment could be applied to baseball and would be equally funny.
Thanks to all for posting.
